CASINO NIGHT? Who are these people? What were they thinking?

Last night the youngest son 'celebrated' his completion of the 8th grade. Apparently this school district only recognizes the 12th grade with a graduation ceremony. In fact, the vice principal from the High School, in her speech, said up until now nothing has counted. From here on it everything counts. Wow, way to encourage those kids who have spent 9 years in school to feel as though they wasted the last 9 years on nothing!\

After the celebration (which is organized by parents because, as I said above the school doesn't recognize their accomplishments) was the 9th grade 'celebration' party. I found out this morning the party was Casino Night. They taught the kids how to play blackjack and they won prizes donated by local business.

Hey, way to go! Let's get them hooked early. Let's be sure they get the gambling bug so they can spend hours and hours in front of slot machines losing money becoming destitute and ending up with nothing but lung cancer and an addiction. Yeah, what a great idea! I'm sure the local casino had a big part in this.

Give me a break. What's up with these people. Don't they realize that gambling and indian casinos is the way the natives are sticking it to the white man? I've never, NEVER heard of anything good coming from someone losing their money in a casino. They are rigged and just a glorified classroom for alcoholism and compulsive gambling.

If I would have know that is what they were doing he would not have gone.

Of course, as always this is just my opinion.

Critter Count

The property we live on was logged about 2 year ago.

When we first looked at it there was nothing but weeds and some brush. <IMG style="BORDER-TOP-WIDTH: 0px; There aren't so many bare spots with just dirt and the leftovers from the loggers. It has been a nice treat to be able to get up early in the morning, sit out by the table and listen as the birds announce the morning. This is one of my daily rituals. It's what gets me moving and sets the tone for the day.

As I was sitting this morning I noticed there wasn't much in the way of bird calls. This is a bit strange as usually it is a nonstop concert of sounds; many of which I cannot identify. Also part of the morning is a visit from our outside kitty, KeiKei. She adopted us last year and is a great hunter. In fact I've stopped feeding her because she got too fat. (yesterday she ate a rabbit!) Anyway, she was on my lap and perked up, green eyes big and drool dripping from her mouth. (she has a bit of a drool problem when she gets excited!) Then the dog started to growl and I heard a light swishing noise behind me.

A deer. A DEER, RIGHT BEHIND ME!. The cat took off like this was dinner for the next month. The dog got up and away the deer bounded (is that a word?), right up the bank behind the house.

So, thus far in the past 24 hours I've seen:

1 newborn fawn, I assume mom was in the bushes somewhere

1 deer that visited me this morning

1 mama bear and 1 cub across the canyon

5 elk grazing on the hillside above Thomas Creek

Ah, spring has sprung.

The count down begins

<IMG style="BORDER-TOP-WIDTH: 0px; Well, actually, they don't do a graduation here but the parents put together a celebration. Weird

Anyway, on Thursday at 10 am he leaves with 49 others on a Washington DC trip for 7 days. He is stoaked!

This is a big trip as you can well imagine. It cost about $2000 per person and they will be going, going ,going almost continuously. This year one of the chaperones is taking his digital camera and laptop and will download pictures daily so those of us back home can see what they're doing.

I am excited for him and a bit....concerned. I'm trying not to be that over protective Mom but you can bet I'll not sleep much as they are flying the red eye out of Portland at 10 pm on Thursday night.

He is taking my NEW camera. and $350 in spending money. It will be interesting to see what he comes back with.

Stay tuned.

seeds for .97 a packet?

Yup, one of my favorite companies is Gardens Alive! They are environmentally responsible and sell products that work. I purchase all my organic 'fertlizer' from them.

I received an email in late May that they were selling their organic vegetable seeds for .97 a packet.

I checked them out and received my order today. WOW! I'm impressed. When I checked back today all the seeds I purchased are back to their normal cost.

I really scored! I'm saving these for next year's sowing. Even if I get a 50% germination rate I'm still way ahead.

You can check them out here.

Gardens Alive!

Color of the week

The color of the week is Black.

A couple nights ago the Dh went for a ride on his quad down into Thomas Creek Canyon.
